In terms of free will, Freud did not believe that we were able to control our own behaviours. These observations led Freud and Charcot to conclude that these disorders were caused by psychological rather than physiological factors.įreud used the observations that he and Charcot had made to develop his theory regarding the sources of personality and behaviour, and his insights are central to the fundamental themes of psychology. Charcot was experimenting with the use of hypnosis, and he and Freud found that under hypnosis many of the hysterical patients reported having experienced a traumatic sexual experience, such as sexual abuse, as children (Dolnick, 1998).įreud and Charcot also found that during hypnosis the remembering of the trauma was often accompanied by an outpouring of emotion, known as catharsis, and that following the catharsis the patient’s symptoms were frequently reduced in severity. For instance, some women experienced a loss of feeling in their hands and yet not in their arms, and this seemed impossible given that the nerves in the arms are the same as those in the hands. Although it is no longer used to describe a psychological disorder, hysteria at the time referred to a set of personality and physical symptoms that included chronic pain, fainting, seizures, and paralysis.Ĭharcot could find no biological reason for the symptoms. As is true of all theories, many of Freud’s ingenious ideas have turned out to be at least partially incorrect, and yet other aspects of his theories are still influencing psychology.įreud was influenced by the work of the French neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot (1825-1893), who had been interviewing patients (almost all women) who were experiencing what was at the time known as hysteria. Many people know about Freud because his work has had a huge impact on our everyday thinking about psychology, and the psychodynamic approach is one of the most important approaches to psychological therapy (Roudinesco, 2003 Taylor, 2009). Freud is probably the best known of all psychologists, in part because of his impressive observation and analyses of personality (there are 24 volumes of his writings). One of the most important psychological approaches to understanding personality is based on the theorizing of the Austrian physician and psychologist Sigmund Freud (1856–1939), who founded what today is known as the psychodynamic approach, an approach to understanding human behaviour that focuses on the role of unconscious thoughts, feelings, and memories. Psychodynamic Theories of Personality: The Role of the Unconscious In this section we will consider two major theories of the origin of personality: psychodynamic and humanistic approaches. Identify the major contributions of the humanistic approach to understanding personality.Īlthough measures such as the Big Five and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) are able to effectively assess personality, they do not say much about where personality comes from. Summarize the accomplishments of the neo-Freudians.Describe the strengths and limitations of the psychodynamic approach to explaining personality.

The more squares you buy, the larger payout you stand to receive. Members can buy any number of squares that their heart desires. After the betters have purchased all squares, the host will then assign each box randomly in order to give everyone an equal and fair chance of winning and securing a coveted position across the pool. It all depends on the clientele purchasing the super bowl squares. The buy-in can be anywhere from five dollars to a hundred dollars for each square. Each axis may be labeled by the team members playing or home/away. The pool/party host creates a 10×10 square chart numbered 0-9 across each axis. But if you’re unfamiliar with sports betting, it’s understandable if you don’t know where to start. Anyone can learn it and start betting on the spread in a typical football game. It’s called a pool, and it uses a simple charting that doesn’t require any previous knowledge. If you are unfamiliar with the world of betting, you must have wondered what that is. This gives both the offensive team and defensive team an extra timeout. If you’ve ever been to a Super Bowl Party, chances are you must have seen a 10×10 betting sheet. There is no warning at the end of the first and third quarters, however. This rule dates back to the days when the referee kept the official time on his watch. With two minutes left in the second and fourth quarters, the officials stop the game clock and announce a two-minute warning - indicating that there are just two minutes left to play in the quarter. Going into the second half however, possession and field possession are not retained the ball is kicked off in the third quarter by the team that received the ball on the opening kickoff. The same thing happens at the end of the third quarter, going into the fourth quarter. The down indicator box and chains, used to measure the distance to a first down, are also placed at the same yard line on the opposite side of the field. The team retains the same field position, so the ball is placed on the same spot but on the other end of the field. Between the third and fourth quarters, there is another two-minute break, giving the players a chance to switch sides once again.Īt the end of the first quarter, the team with possession of the ball retains the possession going into the second quarter. During the Super Bowl, however, this intermission is thirty minutes to allow for the halftime performance. This break lasts 12 minutes, giving the teams enough time to discuss strategy and gain some rest. After the first half, or between the second and third quarter, there is a halftime break. Between the first and second quarter, there is a short, two-minute break in regulation time to allow the teams to change sides. Each 15-minute quarter is followed by a break. How long is the break between football quarters?įootball quarters are fifteen minutes. It can also reduce the likelihood of a team facing unfair weather disadvantages throughout the game, like throwing, having to punt, or having to kick a field goal into an oncoming wind. For example, if one endzone is muddy, defensive and offensive players for both teams have to deal with it for half of the game. This makes the game fairer, by evening the conditions. When setting up a shot look at the colors present and understand how these will work together as mere shades. If you are going to present the world without color you need to work extra hard to hold the viewer’s eye. You need to have enough about a scene to provide interest in the first place. Yes monochrome can be viewed as a novelty, helped in no small part by the abundance of photo filters in mobile apps such as Instagram, but conversion is not a cheap trick or a get out of jail free card. The most important thing to remember about black and white photography is that lack of color is not a reason in itself to shoot an image. Most apps have moved to a subscription model for their “Pro” or “Premium” tiers, so we look for a yearly cost of under $50 if an app asks for more than that, it had better include some seriously awesome perks to justify that extra cost. Here we take a look at some of the pro methods for using monochrome to the max, for images which stand out and demand multiple views. For people who want to upgrade, the cost should be reasonable. In general, we prefer apps that provide generous free modes, don’t restrict common adjustments, and relegate only expert settings or perks like desktop-and-mobile sync and cloud storage to the paid tier. A usable free mode and a reasonable upgrade price: As long as the features are there, most people will take a free app over a paid one.The best apps don’t do this, making the case for going pro in subtler ways. Others pepper the editing space with distracting ads. Few ads and no nagging to upgrade: Some nominally free apps spam you incessantly, trying to get you to upgrade.Support for TIFF, PNG, and other formats is welcome, too. Raw is still a niche concern for mobile-first photographers, but Apple and Google are beginning to make it more accessible for the average person, so it will become more important going forward. Ability to handle multiple formats: Few mobile apps can directly edit raw images, but we prefer those that can. They also allow you to save your edits as a profile so that you can easily apply those edits to other photos in the future. Quality filters and presets: This is subjective, obviously, but the best editing apps provide more attractive filters and presets (and a wider range of them) for those who don’t want to spend a ton of time tweaking each photo. If an editing app retains both the individual edit steps and the slider positions for each adjustment, even after being closed and reopened, all the better.
This allows them to monopolise that knowledge, and maximise the price of the resulting medicines. And a US Government Accountability Office report the previous year noted that the industry model is increasingly to simply buy up smaller firms that have already developed products. As one former US government official complained, the fact we call it the “Pfizer” vaccine is “the biggest marketing coup in the history of American pharmaceuticals”.Ī Stat news analysis in 2018 concluded that Pfizer developed only a fraction – about 23% – of its drugs in-house. That was the work of public money, university research and a much smaller company, Germany’s BioNTech. The truth is, they aren’t the sole inventors of the vaccine. Companies like Pfizer behave more like hedge funds, buying up and controlling other firms and intellectual property, rather than traditional medical research companies. There are many who will argue that while large pharma companies do behave ruthlessly, we must accept it because the service they provide – inventing lifesaving medicines – is so crucial. News last week suggests that they’re getting there, confounding the pharmaceutical industry’s claims that you couldn’t possibly make such a vaccine in poorer countries. Because neither Pfizer nor Moderna will share their knowhow, the scientists have had to start from scratch. Pfizer took a similar line on the new facility that has been set up in South Africa to try to get to grips with mRNA vaccines so that it can share this revolutionary medical technology with the world. It has been claimed that 100 factories and laboratories around the world could have been making vaccines, but have been unable to do so because they cannot access patents and recipes like those held by Pfizer. This sort of suspension of normal business rules during times of great need was previously common, such as with penicillin during the second world war, or sharing smallpox vaccine knowledge in the 1960s.īut in this case, Pfizer’s chief went on the offensive, deriding CTAP as “nonsense” – and saying it was “dangerous” to share companies’ intellectual property. Companies would still have been paid, but they wouldn’t be able to restrict production. They urged companies to share vaccine recipes, creating a sort of “patent pool” known as CTAP, which would have allowed openness and collaboration. These effectively allow big pharma corporations to operate as monopolies, with no responsibility to share the knowledge they own, however much society needs it.Įarly on, the World Health Organization (WHO) recognised that we would need to scale up production very rapidly – and that individual corporations like Pfizer simply wouldn’t have the necessary capacity. That’s because, at the root of the Pfizer model, are a set of intellectual property rules, laid down in trade deals. Pfizer wasn’t selling many doses to poorer countries, but neither would it allow them to produce the life-saving vaccine on their own, through licensing or patent sharing. By last October, Pfizer had sold a measly 1.3% of its supply to Covax, the international body set up to try to ensure fairer access to vaccines. If you look at its global distribution, Pfizer sells a tiny proportion of its vaccines to low-income countries. Pfizer has sold the vast majority of its doses to the richest countries in the world – a strategy sure to keep its profits high. Tom Frieden, a former director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, accused the firm of “war profiteering”. It has been claimed that the company initially tried to pitch their medicine to the US government for an eye-popping $100 a dose. That means the NHS has paid a mark-up of at least £2bn – six times the cost of the pay rise the government agreed to give nurses last year. Either way, the company is selling doses at a huge profit – the UK government paid £18 a shot for its first order, £22 for its most recent purchase. Others have suggested it could be much cheaper. The company claims that its vaccine costs just under £5 per dose to produce. Right from the start, Pfizer was clear that it wanted to make a lot of money from Covid. Ultimately, their approach affects who does, and does not, receive vaccines. Pharmaceutical corporations like Pfizer have led this rollout, setting the terms by which they sell vaccines and deciding who to prioritise. The global vaccine rollout has created levels of inequality so great that many call it a ‘vaccine apartheid’. Cause that’s it. And, well, just when you thought it couldn’t get any simpler… So, now that we’ve got those simple ingredients out of the way that make up our two Salads with Grilled Chicken, you may be wondering what dressing we’re going to use to pull these things together. Even swap out some of the ingredients from salad #1 to salad #2 and vice versa. Swap out the almonds for another nut (walnuts are always a good option!) or seed (I love pumpkin seeds or hemp seeds). Hate Feta Cheese? Use parmesan, blue or bocconcini instead. The best part about both of these Salads with Grilled Chicken is that they can be totally changed up and customized to your own personal liking! Don’t like apple? Use pear instead or omit it completely. I’m team toasted when it comes to any nut in most cases however, raw almonds will work just as well here! Learn how to simply Toast your Almonds in the section down below! But really, it’s the easiest process and will take those almonds (and this salad!) to a whole other level. Toasted Almonds: Ok, so you miiiiiight classify this one as a fancy ingredient because of the word ‘toasted’.It gives the salad a creamy texture and balances out the zing from the onions and the sweetness from the apple. Goat Cheese: This simple ingredient ties the salad together IMHO.I personally skip this step because I enjoy the strong taste the onion has to offer which compliments the rest of the salad…plus, I have no picky kids to feed! Lol But as always, you do you, boo. PRO TIP: If you generally find the flavour of onions too strong, you can mellow it out a bit by soaking the sliced onions in water for 20-30 minutes prior to adding them to the salad. Thinly slice them so they don’t overpower the rest of the ingredients. Red Onion: For crunch, flavour and a bit of zing. You can use whatever kind of apple you like or already have on hand! PRO TIP: To minimize browning, slice the apples then soak them in a cup of water with a squeeze of lemon juice for 3-5 minutes before adding them to the salad with the rest of the ingredients. Pairs perfectly well with all the other ingredients. Apple: For crunch, flavour and a bit of sweetness. And for that, the options are endless! You can use kale, spinach, arugula, green or red leaf lettuce, romaine or a mixture of any or all of the above.Ĭomplete list of ingredients and amounts can be found in the recipe card below. Obviously, both of these salads require a bed of greens to get started. Afterall, the grilled chicken itself offers a ton of flavour and depth to the salad so you don’t need a whole array of ingredients to make these salads satisfying and filling. My aim was to make both of these Salads with Grilled Chicken simple yet flavourful and delicious. So, let’s get to it, shall we? WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO MAKE THESE GRILLED CHICKEN SALADS And lastly, you’re here for the recipes, AM I RIGHT?! And, you just so happen to basically get a 3-in-1 in this post. That’s why I wanna show you TWO ways to spice up a salad with grilled chicken instead of just one. Second, I want to show you that NO, you do not need any fancy ingredients and/or dressings to make greens taste good. First, HELL YES TO FUN, VIBRANT, SIMPLE YET DELICIOUS SALADS. As I got older, I even started making my own creamy dressings ( Homemade Ranch, anyone?!). You see, there is SO much you can do with salad. Salads are like the furthest thing from boring if you ask me. I’ve always hated the phrase ‘who said salads have to be boring?’ Because no one, no one said salads have to be boring. And don’t tell me that any salad with grilled chicken ain’t a good salad. Buuuut regardless, I was allllways down for a good salad. At that time, it probably had a lot to do with dousing my greens in copious amounts of creamy dressings. As weird as it may sound, I used to literally answer “salad” to the ‘what’s your favourite food?!’ question all childhood long. Call it what you want, I’m a salad gal through and through.
